Variable Width Column

Columns whose width also carries data.

In short
Columns whose width also carries data. Select your data, pick the template and map the fields; the result is an editable, data-bound visual that refreshes as your cells change. Nothing in the source is modified.

What it shows

Carries a second measure through column width in addition to height, showing two dimensions together.

When to use it

Typical use: comparing products by both profit margin (height) and revenue (width).

Example scenarios

  • Comparing products by both profit margin (height) and revenue (width).
  • Analysts: carries a second measure through column width in addition to height, showing two dimensions together.

What it needs

Columns for the category labels, the height values and the width values.

How to use it

  1. Select the data range or table you want to visualize.
  2. Open the Charts (Visualizations menu) gallery from the XLMind Plus tab.
  3. Pick the Variable Width Column template and map its fields to your cells.
  4. The visual is inserted bound to your data; it refreshes as the cells change.

What it produces

A live SVG chart shape (auto-refresh and edit).

Effect on your data and undo

Variable Width Column does not change your source data; the result is added as a separate item. It refreshes automatically when the linked cells change. Undo Last rolls the change back in a single step.

How it differs from similar tools

It builds a view Excel does not offer natively, as a data-bound, editable visual in one step; the look refreshes when the data changes.

Good to know

Bindings must match the chart's expected shape; auto-refreshes on source change. Requires the listed data fields (category, height, width).

Limitations

Requires the listed data fields.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit the resulting visual?
Yes. It is made of ordinary Excel objects, so colors, text and size are all freely adjustable.
Does it refresh when the data changes?
Yes. The visual is bound to your cells and updates as the linked values change.
Is my source table modified?
No. The tool only reads your data; the only addition to the sheet is the visual itself.
Can I switch templates later?
You can reopen the gallery and build another template on the same data; the existing visual stays until you delete it.
